1. Think about the classes of books or subjects your child has liked in the past as well as the kinds of characters, situations and topics he or she might relate to or find valuable. 2. Ask friends, relatives and people you trust what books their children read. 3. Brainstorm books you read as a child and consider whether they are appropriate for your child. 4. Ask your librarian to suggest books. 5. Look at books awarded Caldecott, Newberry, and Coretta Scott King recommendations. 6. Vary your choice and try different genres to hold your child's interest. 7. Make sure that the stories and illustrations present different issues in positive ways..
