Everyone adores children's books and picture books. Diane believes the best carry a meaningful message that will stay with your child for the future, like Brighton: One Star's Journey to Shine. It is common knowledge that reading children's books aloud may help pave the way to your child's educational success. Picture books are enjoyable for beginning readers who are just starting their journey. Following are a few tips to help you choose children's books and picture books that are inspirational as well as fun.
1. Consider the classes of books or subjects your child has been drawn to in the past as well as the kinds of characters, situations and topics he or she might relate to or find exciting. 2. Ask friends, relatives and people you trust what books their 'last read. 3. Think about books you read as a child and consider whether they are interesting for your child. 4. Ask your librarian to give you a list of books. 5. Look at books awarded Caldecott, Newberry, and Coretta Scott King prizes. 6. Vary your thoughts and try different genres to hold your child's interest. 7. Make sure that the stories and illustrations present different issues in positive ways..
Here are the Caldecott Medal best children's books in recent years: 2005: Kitten's First Full Moon by Kevin Henkes (Greenwillow Books/HarperCollinsPublishers) 2004: The Man Who Walked Between the Towers by Mordicai Gerstein (Roaring Brook 2003: My Friend Rabbit by Eric Rohmann (Roaring Brook Press/Millbrook Press) 2002: The Three Pigs by David Wiesner (Clarion/Houghton Mifflin) 2001: So You Want to Be President?
