1. Think about the varieties of books or subjects your child has preferred in the past as well as the kinds of characters, situations and topics he or she might relate to or find exciting. 2. Ask friends, relatives and people you trust what books their youngsters read. 3. Recall books you read as a child and consider whether they are interesting for your child. 4. Ask your librarian to recommend books. 5. Look at books awarded Caldecott, Newberry, and Coretta Scott King prizes. 6. Vary your suggestions and try different genres to hold your child's interest. 7. Make sure that the stories and illustrations present different issues in positive ways..
